Soccer Extreme : Not only did Manchester United return to the top of the Premier League on Sunday but, in the process, Ryan Giggs and Edwin van der Sar succeeded in setting two new records, one of which will never be beaten.

Van der Sar became the first goalkeeper in Britain to go more than 20 hours without conceding a league goal while Giggs, in scoring the winning goal at West Ham, claimed the enviable record of scoring in all 17 seasons of the Premier League.

Van der Sar kept his 18th clean sheet of the season, but more importantly, it was his 13th in succession, and a total of 1,212 minutes since he was beaten by Arsenal's Samir Nasri in November.

By reaching the mark, Van der Sar, who had already set the Premier League record and all-time English record in league football, was able to surpass the British record, previously held by Aberdeen goalkeeper Bobby Clark who, during the 1970-71 campaign, went 1,155 Scottish First Division minutes without conceding.

Edwin Van der Sar celebrates Ryan Giggs' goal for United

Van der Sar said: "The record means a lot now but winning 1-0 is so important. We saw Liverpool win on Saturday so West Ham away is was difficult match for us and it has been over the years, so it's a great result for us.

"I put the record down to hard work from everybody. I made a couple of saves but the defenders are incredible, everybody tracks back, it's a team effort but the most important thing is we're back on top."

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson added: "I am proud for Edwin when you consider that he has achieved everything. You can see the way he is motivated by the challenge of his clean sheets. He has everyone jumping out of their skin at the moment because of the record."

Of Giggs's achievement, Ferguson added: "I am searching my memory bank for the last time he scored with his right foot. I think it was against Coventry 12 years ago.

"He is a credit to the game. If anyone wants an example of how to dedicate themselves to football, you could have no greater example than Ryan Giggs."

Giggs added: "We hope we are hitting form at the right time, we've got players coming back from injury and hopefully they'll be back after the international break because we'll need them, with the Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League to come. We'll need the full squad."
